Safety Cloud delivers real-time digital alerts from 6,000+ connected maintenance vehicles to drivers via in-vehicle systems and navigation apps as part of the Road Works Warning II (RWW II) initiative

CHICAGO – March 9, 2026 – HAAS Alert, the leading provider of connected vehicle safety solutions, today announced its role as a core technology partner in Road Works Warning II (RWW II), a joint, industry-wide strategic implementation project aimed at making digital road works warnings an established and permanent part of the transport system across Sweden and Norway.

Through large-scale deployment, real-world use, and a focus on long-term solutions, RWW II creates the conditions for digital traffic safety to move from project-based trials to everyday practice, with HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud digital alerting platform serving as a critical link in getting real-time warnings to drivers and connected vehicles.

Road works sites remain among the most hazardous working environments within European transportation systems. Despite extensive regulations, physical protection measures, and reduced speed limits, serious incidents continue to occur. In 2022 alone, 70 recorded incidents in Sweden involved TMA vehicles (Truck Mounted Attenuators) being struck, often due to driver inattention. Statistics from maintenance contractor Svevia show that, on average, a TMA vehicle is struck every 12.6 days in Sweden. These incidents lead to injuries, traffic disruptions, and high societal costs.

To address this challenge, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and the Norwegian Public Road Administration (Statens Vegvesen), together with industry partners including HAAS Alert, are implementing the Road Works Warning service. The initiative represents a shift from demonstration projects to large-scale deployment, with the objectives to:

• Establish a digital service to warn drivers of slow-moving maintenance vehicles such as TMAs as a permanent part of the transport system
• Improve road safety by providing timely digital warnings
• Reduce accidents involving maintenance vehicles and protect road workers and emergency responders
• Enable service providers to develop innovative, nationwide solutions through standardized and accessible data

Earlier initiatives demonstrated the technical feasibility of digital road works warnings on a limited scale. RWW II focuses on operational deployment: implementing Road Works Warning, scaling it up, and integrating it as a permanent service in regular operations. The service is built on a data interchange node provided by road authorities that enables fast, standardized data exchange between road authorities, contractors, commercial platforms, OEMs, and navigation services. The project aims to deploy the solution using cloud-based technologies within existing systems and work processes, ensure long-term use beyond the end of the project period, and analyze and address organizational, commercial, and regulatory conditions for widespread adoption.

RWW II is based on real-time data from approximately 6,000–8,000 connected road maintenance vehicles across Sweden and Norway, providing unprecedented data volume and geographic coverage. Through established data flows via Norwegian and Swedish data interchange nodes, commercial telematics platforms from BM Systems and ZEEKIT, and HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud® digital alerting platform, warnings about ongoing road works and slow-moving maintenance vehicles can reach drivers directly via:

• In-vehicle infotainment systems, with Škoda the first automaker to receive alerts
• Navigation apps such as Waze and Apple Maps
• Other digital traffic services

This reduces reliance on physical signage and traditional Motorway Control Systems (MCS), contributing to more efficient and cost-effective traffic management.

By shifting the focus from experimentation to deployment, RWW II is expected to achieve:

—  Better traffic information, route planning, and traffic flow

—  A key building block for future connected and automated transport systems

About Road Works Warning II

Road Works Warning II (RWW II) is a joint, industry-wide, strategic implementation project aimed at making digital road works warnings an established and permanent part of the transport system. Led by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and the Norwegian Public Road Administration (Statens Vegvesen), both responsible for establishing their respective national data exchange nodes, RWW II brings together a broad coalition of industry partners to create the conditions for digital traffic safety to move from project-based trials to everyday practice through large-scale deployment, real-world use, and a focus on long-term solutions.

The project unites expertise across the full digital road safety chain. HAAS Alert serves as the digital alerting platform provider, while vehicle data is supplied through the commercial telematics platforms of BM System and ZEEKIT. On the ground, road works operations are carried out by maintenance contractors SVEVIA, SKANSKA, PEAB, Terranor, Mesta, and Precis Vegdrift. The scientific rigour of the initiative is ensured by Chalmers University of Technology and Streampath, who are jointly responsible for the evaluation of RWW II. Overall project management and coordination is handled by ViaPM.
